Baby Driver - "A High-Speed, Toe-Tapping Thrill Ride" (Film Review)

Baby Driver is one of the best movies of 2017! It's a unique movie experience, crossing genres of action, comedy and romance. It's packed with adrenaline inducing, high-speed car chases comparable to Italian Job, Gone in 60 Seconds, the Bourne saga and many other greats. What sets this movie apart though is the special way it incorporates music, giving it a campy vibe that almost makes it feel part musical. The film is so meticulously filmed that there isn't a shot that's unintentional (kudos to director, Edgar Wright)! The soundtrack to this film is so perfectly fitting. You're guaranteed to be in the theater, tapping your feet throughout the entire film! Every move made by the characters and every car maneuver is perfectly in time to the beat of the music, and Wright's attention to detail is outstanding.

Baby Driver stars Ansel Elgort as Baby, a young man who lost his parents as a child in a car accident, and developed a ringing in his ears that he drowns out by always listening to music. At a young age, he attempted to steal a car from Doc (played by Kevin Spacey), a heist ringleader. Impressed by Baby's driving skills, Doc enlists Baby to be the driver for his heist jobs to pay his debt for the attempted car jacking. We see a number of heist crew members throughout the film, but the primary crew includes Buddy (played by Jon Hamm), Bats (played by Jamie Foxx) and Darling (played by Eiza Gonzalez). The cast has great chemistry, but Elgort, in particular, is a standout performance. His charming and likable personality shines in this film, so much so that it's difficult to imagine anyone else being more fitting for the role.

This isn't just an action movie, however. Early in the film, Baby meets Debora (played by Lily James), and so begins the classic tale of love at first sight. Baby is immediately captivated by Debora's singing, and his intrigue draws him out of his typical state of silence. A whirlwind romance transpires. Elgort and James have excellent chemistry as an on-screen couple! You'll, no doubt, be drawn in by their charming performances.

This movie also has a great comedic element with a number of funny and witty moments throughout, thanks to a combination of great writing and performances. Baby Driver has received excellent reviews from both critics and audience, holding strong after opening weekend and racking in $21.1 M. Do yourself a favor and see Baby Driver. It surely will not disappoint!
